After Winter, Must Come Spring
A year ago, I took a massive risk..
My pinky finger was shaking so much over the post button, feeling the weight of my ask. Today 6th February 2025 wasn’t an ordinary day, it was the first time I publicly asked my community for support.
Each shaking moment before pressing the button, I wasn’t sure my follower count or monthly listenings of spotify would help us reach the goal of funding my first ever professional music video.
The choice to ask deeply challenged my insecurities regarding finances. Growing up in the working class does something to you. The scarcity of not having well paid work and not being able to look after yourself or show up for loved ones. Combine this with how the creative sector treats class equality with less than ½ earning for creativity to be their only job. I was desperate not just for support but recognition that my art could have the weight of being able to be shared further.
So when Lauren Taylor Gee not only suggested the idea of the crowdfunder but also worked tirelessly to campaign and produce the music video, I was elated. I was no longer a self-managed artist, but working in partnership with a creative director who saw and uplifted the vision.
In October 2025 we launched the music video amongst friends, family and folks who were interested in our work and community of fellow Black British Hood Feminists at South London Gallery . Since releasing, we have previewed the music video at La Noir De.. symposium at Univeristy of Cambridge and featured on Wordplay.
I deeply appreciate everyone who lifted up the vision too. Continue to share and enjoy our creative labour of love.
Today is bandcamp friday, a ⅓ of the bandcamp sales go to Sistah Space a DV charity supporting Black Caribbean and African diaspora Women.
